A sixteen year old, we call Esther, came to an Empower event with a friend in July 2021. As mentors, survivors and guests arrived the room was full of energy. No one would have known the depth of pain Esther carried behind her youthful smile. Esther’s friend told her about the Alive at Last mentorship program and the community of women devoted to empowering women who have been trafficked or exploited.
Esther explained to her friend that she was not interested in sharing her story which included gang rape and ongoing abuse for the past two years. However, Esther is bright and loves to learn. So the Life Purpose mentorship program offered by Alive at Last appealed to her. She was also intrigued by the topic of Self-Cohesion and healing from unhealthy relationships that was taught by a licensed Psychologist at this Empower event.
Esther joined in the group prayer time at Empower even though she had stated she was agnostic. She was matched with an Alive at Last mentor who is also a survivor. She was given a scholarship to Empower U where she can access the video replays from all our past training events that are specific to survivor healing. She has been able to connect with former survivors and a community of mentors and volunteers to support her healing journey in our online community.
In August, we helped make it possible for Esther to attend a small group led by a former trafficked survivor who is now a licensed counselor along with 8 other survivors. Esther has a long journey of healing ahead but Alive at Last will continue to offer support for as long as she needs it. We have survivors connecting virtually in our online community who are in desperate need of Christ-centered one on one counseling. We try to meet this need as we partner with trauma trained therapists who are part of our community however the need is greater than we can fulfill.
