Janelle experienced years of abuse starting in her childhood. This led to vulnerability and promiscuity in her teen years. When she embarked on her own healing journey she knew one day she wanted to use the pain from her past to help other survivors. Janelle says her favorite thing about volunteering with Alive at Last is building trust with the women she sees at the shelter each week. Women often join the Alive at Last program anxious and unsure about what to expect. They question, “Am I smart enough to do the work when I didn’t complete high school? How will I manage my anxiety? Will my mentor/small group leader understand my pain?”
Janelle prioritizes building trust by being open and sharing her own story of sexual exploitation. Sharing her own story is often the first step in helping survivors she serves trust and gains a sense of hope that their own lives can be transformed. Janelle is proof that what the enemy meant for evil in her life is now being used for good.
