Amy is doing great after she attended Alive and Last’s small group. If you have not read her story, please go here to get caught up. After she graduated, Alive at Last connected her with a mentor. Below is the mentor’s perspective.
“I met with Amy in 2018, just a few days before she left Salvation Army. Case workers were present for her and her children. They discussed Amy’s exit plan and what she needed to accomplish, such as finding a job, finding housing, and getting a counselor- all required parts of her exit program.
Amy was noticeably overwhelmed during the meeting. Even though we had just met, I was able to be a calming presence and encouraged her to suggest a more reasonable time commitment to accomplish her tasks.
Following the meeting with the case-workers, I encouraged her to just take one step at a time. We arranged a time for her to expect my calls in the days ahead in order to help her keep track of the many things she needs to do. I took notes during the meeting in order to help Amy process and organize this transition.
I met with Amy following her graduation from Salvation Army. She moved in with her mother short-term and accidentally broke her ankle. She needed pain medication, but this was an issue due to her history of drug abuse. We discussed how she could manage the pain and monitor her use of the prescription meds.
We followed up with Amy by phone within a couple days of our visit due to her concerns about the prescription meds. She was able to take over the counter meds such as Tylenol pm for sleeping. She was so proud to make it through such a painful situation and manage the pain without using prescription drugs.
Next, Amy moved into a small one-bedroom apartment alone. Her two younger children were living in foster care with a loving family. Thankfully, Amy was awarded custody of her two younger children this week. They moved in on Dec. 18th, just in time for Christmas!”
Imagine how powerful this Christmas will be for Amy’s family this year. Amy has committed her life to Christ and has new hope in her heart and for her family. If you would like to be part of a story like this, click here to apply to be a volunteer.
